If your life as a Christian can be explained in terms of you, what have you to offer to your neighbor next door? The way he lives his life can already be explained in terms of him, and as far as he is concerned, the only difference between him and you is that you happen to be ‘religious” while he is not. “Christianity” may be your hobby, but not his, and there is nothing about the way you practice it which strikes him as at all remarkable. There is nothing about you which leaves him guessing, and nothing commendable of which he does not feel himself equally capable without the inconvenience of becoming a Christian.

Only when your quality of life baffles your neighbors are you likely to get their attention. it must become patently obvious to them that the kind of life you are living is not only commendable, but beyond all human explanation. Your life must be the consequence only of God’s capacity to reproduce Himself in you, however little they may understand this. The people around you must become convinced that the Lord Jesus Christ is Himself the essential ingredient of the life you live.

We are surrounded by seeking souls whom the Holy Spirit, in all kinds of wonderful ways, has been awakening so that they may become conscious of the missing factor in their existence—even though they probably will not be able to rationalize that need of put in into words. That missing factor is God Himself, and without Him, human life is only mere existence.

So be alert and sensitive to the One indwelling your humanity. he is watching all over the world, looking not on the outside, but on the inside of those around you. “The LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7), and their awakening hearts are longing to see the reality of God in you.
